**** After four albums of not much variation in sound, something like this was bound to happen sooner or later. Sure, it doesn't change too much but it's enough to distinguish it from their previous material easily. Moments like 'Partners In Crime' and 'One Way Trigger' certainly are better than others, and while there's nothing bad, it's not all of that consistency that is so idiosyncratic with The Strokes. Additionally, it's lacking a standout along the lines of 'Reptilia', 'Last Nite', 'Juicebox' or even 'Under Cover of Darkness'. It's cool and it deserves attention, but I wouldn't go as far as to suggest it's better than any of their previous four. 4.25* |
