It sounds like "Thrift Shop" meets "Uptown Funk". If you haven't heard this song yet, now you know what to expect.

I happened to stay up very late last night (3 am, to anyone interested), and when searching on Facebook before going to bed, it turns out Macklemore just released a new song, and my staying up late was rewarded immediately.

I've watched the video clip 3 times in the last day and heard the song on the radio twice already, but all I can say is that I am hooked! I'm just loving this.

For me, this made more of an impact on me than "Uptown Funk" did on first listen, and I also got to watch the music video when it was at a similar viewership count to "Thrift Shop" (in the tens of thousands), so it's going to be hard for me to not compare it to either of those songs.

As a matter of fact, I think I'm already starting to like "Uptown Funk" more because of this song, which is good, because that is a song I always wanted to like more than I actually did.

I'm not sure whether I should like or dislike this song though. Of course I've put forward the reasons for liking it, but a reason I should dislike it is that after listening to this, every other song on the radio just sounds so dull and lifeless in comparison to this. I was never too impressed by "How Deep Is Your Love", but upon listening to that after this, it sounded more boring than ever.

In the end though, of course I'm going to stick with liking it. It's so much fun to me, and could even become my favourite song of his.

Now all I have to do is make sure I don't over-listen to this song, and it's all good.

Hopefully it make a big dent on the charts.

EDIT: I should have done this sooner, but a definite 6*, only my second of the year from memory.

Pretty much everything on the radio in the last couple of months has paled in comparison to this, what with its unrelenting energy, tenacity, humour and irreverence.

Once again, and this is a question I'm asking myself more and more, why would I want to listen to anything else when I could be listening to this instead.

It's good to see that it made #1, only to be torn from that position by some boring drag of a song, which, to me, feels pretty flavourless and dull compared to this.

And I officially like "Uptown Funk" now, mainly due to this (as well as not hearing that on the radio all the time anymore). I'll get around to re-doing my review for that song sometime.

Omi, it looks like you have some competition for best song of the year.

There are only three real contenders for best hit song of the year (this, Omi/Felix Jaehn's "Cheerleader" and The Weeknd's "Can't Feel My Face"). I've been thinking it over for about a month now, but I'm still not any closer to a final answer.

But anyway, back to this song, it's awesome, and may even become my second favourite from him (it's in the same zone as "Thrift Shop"). But as for becoming my favourite Macklemore song ("Can't Hold Us"), I don't think that it is going to get to that level for me. Time will tell.

5* -> 6*

***

Uptown Funk you say, well in that case count me out. To be fair though this isn't anywhere near as bad as that but this is still their worst track ever with some bits being quite annoying. 2.2.

EDIT: What was I saying, a 2.2, this thing is absolutely atrocious.
Down to a 1. HATE this sooooooooo much now, just as much as I hate Uptown Junk. This Downtown junk is one of the worst singles of the year for sure, I can't comprehend how so many music buyers can digest this shit and actually enjoy it. Needs to fuc-ing DIE!

Disappointing comeback. It's a mess of a song. What happened to the track with Ed Sheeran?!

EDIT. it took its sweet time but I can honestly say that I am feeling this now. Strange and silly but oddly catchy. The last four lines of the second verse annoy me a little bit though. It just seems out of place, in a track that already seems so uneven

Well I enjoyed this track. Awesome production from start to finish, although Macklemore's rap could've been better.

Groovt doch überaus ordentlich.

It has this massive, grandiose feel and sound to it which I like, but that's about where my liking ends. Macklemore does a decent job but I could really do without the plethora of featured artists (especially the screecher of the second chorus). I'd rather watch the Coles ads honestly.
***

***
Very smooth flow in the first half, and Macklemore's second verse is among his best ever work. The chorus goes for an uplifting pop melody, which is fair enough, but then it does sound somewhat out of place. All in all it's a good comeback, better than some of their previous singles but perhaps does not reach the heights of the big 3 #1s.

Edit: So this has become far bigger than it conceivably should have, I don't think I could enjoy this much anymore. 3.25

Groovy! 😎

It's alright. Was expecting something more Top 40 but this is even better.

When I first heard this song, I didn't really have any opinion on it, but now that I've listened to it some more, I'm starting to really like it. I think the rapping is solid and on par to Macklemore's other work, and I really love the production of it. It gets me really pumped up whenever I hear this and I'm glad its starting to get played on the radio more.

Didn't like it at first listen... but saw the music video and really started getting into it.

Macklemore tries too hard and it's embarrassing. In fact it's just generally rather offputting. Let's never forget the fact that when he swept the rap category in the Grammys, he sent Kendrick an apology text...which he then uploaded to his Instagram account because what's the point of being a nice guy if no one knows you're a nice guy?!

That carries through on this track too. It's really clear that Macklemore is aware of his white privilege and doesn't want anyone to judge him for it (and you shouldn't, you should pin that on the media & listeners if anything). It feels like he goes at lengths here, recruiting Grandmaster Caz, Melle Mel & Kool Moe Dee, as if to say 'hey, I respect the pioneers of my genre, I even got them on my song!'. I can't disapprove of this on principle, but it does feel kind of shoehorned in, especially since he's just got them in to rap about mopeds. I'd rather one of them have a verse because ol' Haggerty can't quite do it right on his own. I mean do we really need the image of a scrotum dragging on concrete? He also randomly turns it into a love song near the end but then professes that 'there's layers to this shit; tiramisu'.

Meanwhile, Ryan Lewis does his best to keep it engaging, though oddly it just sounds like "Safety Dance" to me. And if the '80s guy isn't satisfied enough, in comes Eric Nally sounding like some combination of Freddie Mercury & Michael Jackson. He proves to be a bit much towards the end of the song when he squeals on his own. And actually the last chorus is kind of a nice pay off, because say what you will, it's a heck of an earworm, and it's pulled together nicely there. You just have to sit through soooo much to get there.

Still, I'll take Macklemore over Lil Dicky any day.

Scrotums dragging on concrete? How'd I miss that bit? lol

It's unconventional bop that grows on you.

It's quite outrageous but wasn't Thrift Shop also? This chorus doesn't quite hit the mark but some nice production gems from Ryan Lewis pushes this to a 4.

I hate the chorus. The rest is average, but it doesn't compare to any of his previous hits. 2.5

Their best to date!

Love it - Thrift Shop and then some!! This is not the sort of music I would normally listen to, but this pushed all my buttons. Hip hop with self-deprecating humour.
It has that style we've become accustomed to from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis. I'm warmed to this quicker than their other singles so I do think of this as their best release to date. It goes close to being too long but that's not so bad if this doesn't get overplay. 4.3*

Retro-Hip-Hop.

Gute 4.

Geweldige funk plaat!
