One LP and one single were issued on Stax by journeyman bluesman John Lee Hooker. The tapes were purchased from Miami record distributor Henry Stone who, through his company Tone Distributors, handled the Stax line in the Southeast.
Hooker had recorded material that Henry Stone had produced back in 1953 that was issued on the King Records subsidiary Deluxe. The Stax material was recorded in the late 1960s when Hooker found himself in Florida. Stone picks up the sotry: "He called me and he needed some money as usual. I took him to Criteria [Studios]. With John Lee Hooker, man, you just cut and God knows how many sides you end up with. Turn the tape deck on and just keep going, give him a bottle cap on his foot so you can get the beat."
Stone ended up with enough material to lease half of it to Atlantic and half to Stax. He remembers that "Grinder Man" mainly sold to jukebox operators in the South. |
